Nathaniel is a gardener employed on Mr. Caffrey's island, How-Boutcha-Love-Me Island. Following Caffrey's death he is the island's only inhabitant apart from his gardening tools and Highland longhorn cattle which Caffrey had imported from Scotland to impress the object of his affections, Gwendolyn.
In Sea Me Now, he first appears threatening Teddy and the Belchers with his weed whacker warning them to get off the island. After asking to use the phone for help, he kindly takes them on a tour of the house and offers his "trespasser's punch". After he tells Caffrey's story to them, he offers to tow the 'Sea Me Now' home for them.
